Trapped on Wix? What moving actually involves
"Trapped" is the word people use, and it's fair: you can't take a Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy site with you. The design and code stay on their platform forever — that's the business model. But what you own is more than you think, and the move is a solved problem. Here's exactly what happens.
What you can take with you
- Your domain name — legally yours, even if the platform registered it. It can be unlocked and transferred.
- Your words, photos and logo — all your content is yours.
- Your Google presence — the rankings belong to your domain, not to Wix. Protected properly, they survive the move.
What you can't take is the site itself — the template, the builder, the code. Which is fine, because that's usually the part that was holding you back.
The move, step by step
- The new site is built alongside the old one. Nothing is touched on your live site; you keep trading throughout.
